Engyon is a system for embedding cryptographic confidentiality, integrity, and provenance directly into text-based documents. It works in any file format, any language, any editor.
THE NAME
ἐγγύη — a pledge.
Engyon comes from the Ancient Greek wordἐγγύη (engýē) — meaninga pledge, surety, security, guarantee. In classical Athenian law, engýē was the legal concept of standing surety for another: a binding commitment that a promise would be kept, backed by something tangible.
The word itself is built fromἐν (en, "in, within") and the root of γύῖον (gýion, "limb") — literally, to hold in hand, to have in one's grasp. A pledge is something you hold; something that binds.
This is exactly what Engyon does for documents: it embeds apledge — a cryptographic guarantee — directly inside the text. The security is not applied from outside; it liveswithin the document itself, inseparable from the words it protects.
Pronunciation
The original Greek uses a close front rounded vowel (IPA [y]) — a sound that doesn't exist in English. In practice, Engyon is pronounced two ways:

The hard-g version is more faithful to the Greek. Both are acceptable.

THE LOGO
The seal of surety.
The Engyon logo is a seal — the visual embodiment of engýē. In the ancient world, a pledge was ratified by pressing a signet ring into wax. The impression was both a guarantee and a boundary: inside the seal was the protected content; outside was the world.
The logo carries three elements:
- Concentric rings — the outer boundary (the pledge) and inner boundary (the document). Two layers of protection, echoing EPT's multi-level classification model.
- The letter E — formed by three horizontal "pledge bars" bound together on the left by a vertical stroke. The bars represent the three pillars of EPT:confidentiality, integrity, andprovenance. The binding stroke is the pledge itself — the cryptographic guarantee that holds them together.
- The notch — a break in the outer ring at the top. This is the seal's impression point — where the signet was pressed. It reminds us that protection is applied, not inherent; it is an act of will.
The mark works from favicon size (16px) to full display. In light mode, it appears in copper (#b8633e); in dark mode, in gold (#e8b06b). Both are warm metals — the colors of things that endure.
THE VISION
A document model that protects itself.
Most security tools sit around documents — encrypted volumes, access control lists, DRM wrappers. Engyon takes a different approach: protection lives inside the document itself, as human-readable annotations in the host language's comment syntax.
This means a single text file can contain both public and classified sections. An unclassified version replaces classified blocks with opaque ciphertext references. The same file can be reclassified, restoring the original content. Signatures remain valid across classification transitions because they cover the ciphertext representation.
The result is a format that supports collaborative editing at different clearance levels, merge-friendly version control, and self-describing crypto parameters — all in plain text.
